Students selected for 2021 honor bands

Six students from West Senior and West Middle schools have been selected for the 2021 New York State Band Directors Association All-State Honor Bands.

More than 650 applicants were submitted for consideration. From those approximately 300 students were selected for the honor groups. Students were selected based on past scores at both state and county solo festivals. There are two bands that were selected, a high school band of 140 and a middle school band of approximately 160 students.

Carter Sainsbury, baritone saxophone; Joshua Wright, baritone saxophone; Jacob Jachlewski, clarinet; Erin Hagler, oboe; Cameron Blickwedehl, trumpet were selected for the middle school honor band. Anna Blickwedehl will play clarinet in the high school honor band.

This year, the New York State Band Directors Association All-State Honor Bands will take place in a virtual format. In preparation for a virtual concert performance students will take part in a digital/virtual experience that includes rehearsals, sectionals and workshops led by conductors, college professors and guest clinicians leading to the creation of a professional multitrack video. The students will record their parts separately and submit them for editing. Their experience will culminate in a virtual concert watch party in early March.
