East alumna publishes book to promote the importance of animals and the natural world

Newly published author Leanne Schad is sharing her book “Lia Saves the Sea” to give the gift of reading to children during an unusually difficult year.

“As I work at a New York State health department I understand how COVID can vastly challenge any environment. However, I know that schools face some of the greatest challenges,” she said.

Schad, a 2012 graduate of East Senior High School, said she wrote and illustrated the book after completing her master’s degree in environmental science from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.

“I wanted to promote environmental stewardship in young people as well as to teach them to stand up for what they believe in and to stand up to bullies,” she said.

Published by Covenant Books, Schad’s new book highlights the importance of friendship among living things.

Schad said 20 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Environmental Defense Fund to help save sea turtles and other sea life.

Readers can purchase “Lia Saves the Sea” from the Apple iTunes store, Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
