Distraction-Free Learning Environment

Overview:

Requirement: Every school district, charter school, and BOCES must adopt and publish a policy prohibiting the use of internet-enabled devices by students during the school day anywhere on school grounds by August 1, 2025.

Collaboration: Before adopting the policy, each school district, charter school, and BOCES must engage local stakeholders—including employee unions, parents, and students—in its development.

 

Stakeholder Feedback:

• Prior to the adoption of Policy #7130, "Personal Technology Policy (Updated in Accordance with NYS Distraction-Free Schools Law, 2025)", feedback was sought:

  • Stakeholder feedback
    ○ Union leadership (6/9/25)
    ○ Student leaders (6/9/25 and 6/12/25)
    ○ Parents/guardians (6/9/25 letter and survey)
    ○ Parent Survey (Open until 6/13/25)
 • Code of Conduct Revisions - public comment period open from June 17, 2025 – July 18, 2025.
