Welcome East Middle 5th Grade Class of 2019-2020!Well August is almost over and in just a few days I'll finally get to meet you face to face. Even though its been a great summer, I am definitely excited. I know there is probably some nerves right now, some excitement too, and probably some worries for many of you- that includes the parents too...and even me. Don't worry. All the people at the school know there are adjustments and lots of new things you'll be doing. We are there to help you. Relax but be prepared to think and do your best. There have been a few changes to 5th Grade at East Middle School for this year. One big change is that there are now 4 teams in 5th Grade. I'll be teaching on a team with Mrs. Eppolito. She will teach Math and Science and I'll be teaching Social Studies and English Language Arts. We are Team 5 Blue.Another big change is that our Open House is going to take place on Wednesday, September 5th. That's the day before school starts! A letter will be sent home with the details but the same information is posted in the image below. Its a great chance to come in, find your rooms, your teachers, your lockers and to drop off your supplies.Classes move quickly right from the start so please do everything you can to have your supplies and be ready to go. Its a lot easier if you start ready to go and aren't playing catch-up. I know many students worry about the locks. If you haven't already worked with a combination lock we'll help you out. It'll just take a bit of time. I highly recommend that you consider purchasing an inexpensive combination lock and lear how to use that one. Once you get the way they work, the locks are a breeze. Speaking of supplies, here's the list. I've included some advice or thoughts on the various items to try to help you out.
Packs of (12)pencils
Please do not buy mechanical "clicker" pencils. Old fashioned #2 are all that's needed. This may seem like a lot but kids will go through them pretty quickly. Pencil bag
Please no boxes, they are harder to carry around and break open when dropped. A larger bag (7"x9"ish) is preferred as it just holds more. Twelve pack of colored pencils
Please do not get markers or crayons. You don't need the huge 24 pack or bigger either. Its just more to carry. 12 is plenty. A hand pencil sharpener
It should have the small compartment to trap the shavings when used. Five Subject notebook
Please not single subject notebooks. All the notes will fit in here if your child doesn't raid it for writing paper. Highlighters
The Green Team (us) will not be using them this year. Black permanent fine marker
This is to label your belongings. Red Pens
These are for correcting. One hundred sheet pack of lined paper.
Please get the "Wide Ruled" if possible. Index Cards (100 Pack)
These are for use in making flash cards and other study aids. Small bottle of white glue
Please do not get a glue stick. It just doesn't hold well. Glue Sticks
This is in addition to the bottle of glue Post-It Notes
Square package. The 3"x3" size gives the best change to write on them School scissors
Box of Facial Tissues
These get shared all year long through the allergy and flu seasons. (100 noses use a lot of tissues:-) *Spiral Sketch Book
This is for Art classes. *Wooden pencils
These can be taken from your packs. They are also for Art classes. *large pencil eraser
This will be for Art classes as well Avery Flexi-view Folder
The school has purchased these. ***Roll of paper towels
This is NOT REQUIRED, it's just to help in our room. The paper towels we have don't do much absorbing when there is a spill or bloody nose.I really believe that you will see that East Middle is an absolutely awesome school. There are SO many opportunities to do cool things and to learn so much. There are clubs, sports, musicals, concerts and activities to take advantage of as well as the classes and events we have in store at the grade level. The sky is the limit for you. Please don't be mistaken though. While the school is fantastic, there is work to do. You earn the right to participate in everything by completing your assignments and by meeting the expectation that you will act like ladies and gentlemen. Those things will open many doors for you- in school and in life.Your adventure begins at Open House on Wednesday, September 4th from 4:30- 6:30. There is no formal schedule, stop in whenever you can. We'll have a chance to introduce ourselves and I will be assigning lockers at that time. You can tour the room, find the other rooms on your schedule and meet me and Mrs. Eppolito. If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them for you. (The schedules are not always easy to read) You can even set up and organize your locker before you leave. Classes start up bright and early the next morning. On Thursday, enter through the main doors near the Auditorium and if you are in my homeroom please just come straight to room 3 after you stop at your locker. We'll iron out schedules, explain things, direct you, review procedures... during the course of that day and into Fridayday as well. Just have supplies, be ready to listen and think and we'll have a super start.I'm looking forward to Wednesday and meeting you all.Best Regards,Mr. Ball
Below are a pair of pictures of our room (also known as "The Museum").
EXTRA CREDITThere are many opportunities for children to earn extra credit. It is my position that to earn extra credit a student must do something beyond the typical work of his or her school studies.Prime examples of this are doing things like visiting an historical museum or place with the family, scouts, church group etc. A student might interview a grandparent or a veteran etc. Another option would be a project that your child takes on that is beyond what is assigned. They might make a family tree, diorama of an historical event or other creative activity. Students should get my approval and guidance before doing a project. The activity, project or visitation MUST happen during this school year. I cannot award credit for past trips. If a child brings in proof of the activity such as his/ her ticket, a note from a parent or guardian or similar, I will award credit.Credit is awarded by raising the student's grade on his or her lowest assignment. I raise a grade up to 8 points (one letter grade) for each activity they do. If they do two extra credit activities then two assignments are raised, or a single assignment might be raised twice. If grades are already very high, I might award classroom merits instead of raising a grade.Extra Credit is NEVER REQUIRED... It is OPTIONAL and done at the student's discretion.
Our District's Parent Portal is not yet live for the 2019-2020 school year. It will be online at about the 5th week of the year. Here is the Parent Link. You can/should probably add it to your 'Favorites'.
Reminder: Our Report Cards are NOT sent home on paper. Your child's grades will be reported to you electronically unless you notify the office to send home a paper copy. Report Cards are published through the Parent Portal. You can also use the Parent Portal to keep track of your child's progress on a daily basis. Each family has a password that is unique for their child. Teachers do NOT have access to your passwords. If you do not have yours, or need to create a new account please contact the Middle School Office or call:Renee Denz at 677-3685 or Laurie-Jean Stachowiak at 677-3537 for a password reset or tech support. The office cannot give the passwords directly to your child. They will be mailed to your contact address.Parents please check here often as I will do my best to keep you up to date with the news. I have also asked the children to look at the grades with you. It is important that they know and understand the importance of the grades and are active in keeping them high.Sincerely,Mr. Ball
Room 3 Mooch ListWe are always looking for items to make our room a little more fun, comfortable and successful. If you think you can help, please do. The list grows and changes all year long so please check here often.
Items we could use Descriptions auction items We hold 'auctions' throughout the year using merits from our token economy. As such, we always need gently used games and toys, promotional items, sports equipment, dollar store items etc. that we can use for our auctions. If you are clearing out, cleaning, downsizing or have access to things for the children, please consider donating them. museum items If you happen to have any items that would add to our classroom museum, or a presentation you may want to do, please feel free to contact me and we'll arrange to display or present them. We LOVE old stuff. Of course items are on a lend/lease so you'll get them back (unless you want to donate them). boxes of facial tissues Between allergy seasons, cold and flu seasons each year we go through boxes of them. If you would send in a box with your child that we can share it would be appreciated.
