Unit 3: The 13 English Colonies
This unit will focus on the 13 English colonies. Students will learn why many of the colonies were founded. Beginning with Jamestown and Plymouth, we will explore the motivations of the colonists and learn how they influenced our present-day government and economy. Colonists expanded the ideas of freedom of speech and freedom of religion in New England. As students explore the Middle Colonies, they will learn about the ethnic and religious diversity in that region and the importance of port cities like Philadelphia and New York. Finally, as they study the Southern Colonies, students will learn of the economic importance of cash crops, and the development of plantations, including slavery. The journey through the 13 colonies will be an adventure!
