Phonological awareness

  • Phonological Awareness refers to the understanding that words are made of individual sounds.  Phonological awareness skills usually begin in the preschool years and is taught in the primary grades.  Difficulty with phonological awareness skills hinders early reading skills.  Phonological awareness can be broken down in to specific skills:

    -rhyming (the ability to distinguish words that do or do not rhyme and the ability to produce rhyming words)

    -isolating sounds, syllables and words

    -substituting sounds and syllables in words
     
    -deleting sounds and syllables in words

    -blending sounds and syllables into words
