Reading with your child

  • Many times I have watched parents listening to their children read.  It is very interesting to see what occurs.  I see parents pointing to the words for the children.  I see the parents stopping the children when reading and telling them they have made a mistake.  Sometimes I also see the parents trying to take the child's attention away from the pictures.  

    Although, anytime spent with our children reading is a great benefit to them, it would be even greater if we allowed them to do the reading...all the reading. When a kindergartener or first grader begins to read it is incredibly important that they do all the finger-pointing/tracking of the text.  This is the first sign of independence as a reader.  When a parent points for them
